We have two boys who love everything to do with technology. Gaming videos, science experiments, creative builds, funny channels — YouTube has so much great content for kids. For a while, it felt almost like the perfect babysitter.

Then the recommendations kicked in.

One afternoon, one of our sons ended up watching a video that was clearly not meant for him — violent gameplay, adult language, the kind of content you'd never choose yourself. And it wasn't a one-off. The algorithm kept pushing more. The only solution? Sit next to them every single time, or take away the screen completely.

Screen time was its own battle. Every day ended the same way: arguments about 'just five more minutes', negotiations, frustration on both sides. We set timers, moved tablets out of reach, had the same conversation a hundred times. It just didn't stick.

We couldn't find a solution that actually gave us control without locking kids out of YouTube entirely. So in 2025, we built one.
